Kosrae's Coast
Reducing coastal hazard risks on Kosrae
about Kosrae
Where?
Kosrae is the eastern-most island of the Caroline Islands chain which span the central Pacific Ocean between the Phillipines and Palau to the west and the Marshall Islands to the east. The island is one of the four states (and 607 islands) in the Federated States of Micronesia, the other states being Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap.

The island has a population of about 8000. There are six main villages. Tafunsak, Lelu Malem and Utwe are all joined by the one road on the island. Tofol is the state administrative centre. Walung is on the western side of the island and until recently could only be reached by boat at certain times of the tide.
Known as the island of the sleeping lady, it is about 109 square kilometres in size and has a volcanic mountainous uninhabited interior covered in lush tropical rainforest. The coastline is a mix of some of the oldest unspoilt mangrove forests in the Pacific and white sandy beaches. A fringing reef surrounds the island with pristine coral reefs and superb underwater visibility.
